How clean is clean?
Not sure about you but I can't avoid that awful sensation of grime on the drivetrain and constant grinding noise, can't avoid that riding fixed, so I went ahead and sorted that shit out. Which leads me to think: What's your style and method to keeping your drivetrain spick and span? Share it.
Today's was an express clean that I possibly do every month, specially after a few weeks of rain.
I take the chain off, and spray it with degreaser in a plastic bag so I can link by link with my hands make sure it gets in there, massaging them like a you would a girl's nips. Then wait for a minute and rinse the life out of it, making sure none of that degreaser is there, leaving the links clean as my ears.
Then the pleasure of cleaning the chainring looking for teeth filth with the same degreaser but not soaking it, just to help the removal of grime.
Now that it's all dry and spiffy, I put everything back together, getting a nice and balanced tension of the chain, spin it a couple of seconds to make sure its all rolling nicely and I use the "king of lubes" rock and roll, blue bottle lube, perfect viscosity for your pleasure.
That's pretty much what I'd say you should do according to how much you love your bike. But a little of grime is always good so dont do it too often.

Take the chain off, stick it in an old bidon with some citrus based degreaser. Give it a solid shake then bust out the toothbrush and start scrubbing. Nice hard rinse and it's good to go. Take off the sprocket and chainring and do the same with those. Put everything back together and I use Squirt lube - it's a dry one and works a treat.
Make sure that when you put the chain back on, make sure that the valve stem is at the 6 o'clock position and you drive side crank is at the 3 o'clock so it looks good when you snap pics of your pride and joy.

Also on the topic of drivetrains. I was wondering, just how stretched is stretched. I got my hands on one of those gauges and it said about half worn. And can any of you recommend a good chain that is a bit higher quality?
